“It's like a good friend from home showing you around his favorite city!”
Reviewed March 19, 2015

In the past I have been a bit skeptical of private tours on a vacation. I assumed it would cost too much and be "awkward" to be with an individual I didn't know in a place I wasn't really comfortable to begin with. Boy, was I ever wrong - at least when it comes to my experience last month in Germany with "The Thirsty Historian!"

A friend and I were in the area last month on an extension of a business trip and decided, with such limited time to visit, we needed to consider connecting with a tour company to show us the sights. In Germany, a tour that does that AND focuses on the beers for which the Bavaria region is so famous seemed almost to good to be true so we just had to try it.... We wound up booking tours with these guys for two different days in Munich and Bamberg, where we actually stayed overnight in the guest rooms above one of the brew houses!

It's hard to describe our experiences in a way that would be of exact value to others because with The Thirsty Historian, Levi and the gang will put together what interests YOU most and even tweak the tour along the way to best meet your needs. Levi knows the area, and the beer, SO well and yet, because he moved there from the U.S. many years back, it seemed as though he had a similar kind of perspective on the city and it's culture as we did. He could relate to us and our questions, because they were probably some of the same ones he had on his first visit. The best way to describe it all is to say that it was like "your good friend's friend meets you in Munich to show you their city and all of it's treasures."

My best advice is to get over any "reservations" you may have and reserve a spot with The Thirsty Historian if you are visiting the area. I can assure you that you won't regret the decision!

“Five Stars!”

Five stars for the Thirsty Historians!! I had the pleasure of companionship of both Levi and John at various times on my two-day tour of Munich. From wandering the city’s local markets, to clinking jugs of beer at Oktoberfest, it was a perfect intertwine of informative history and festive culture. I experienced places and stories there’s no way I would have discovered on my own.

The region’s hidden gems are their forte: I felt transported back hundreds of years to medieval Bavaria drinking under wooden beams and stoned walls… only to be surpassed by accordion sing-alongs and breaking some rules. Levi’s wooden hammer keg barrel tapping skills and German folk song translations were superb. John’s local recommendations and transportation knowledge also greatly eased travel logistics both within and departing Munich.

My only regret?... Not having another day!

“Fantastic Voyage”

What can we say? After reading all of the glowing reviews, we thought for sure the averages were being messed with by shills or the too-easily pleased...I mean, this guy CAN'T be this skilled, his tours that great, right?

Color us embarrassed...We were wrong. Embarrassingly wrong.

Levi (The Thirsty Historian himself) did right by us, and more. We did 2 Day Tours (The Oldest Brewery In The World Tour and The Beer Hike) and we learned so much about the history, culture and beer of Bavaria that our brains felt as full as our stomachs were at the end of each day. And yet all in the mellow, Wisconsinian (is that a word? We're making it one for Levi) tones of our guide, so we didn't even realize we were being filled full of cool and useful facts.

Also, he listens, and acts on it to the benefit of his customers. When we mentioned our interest in Schnapps (not really expecting anything, just in conversation), he went out of his way to find a Distillery, and took us there! This was not a place we ever would have found, as it was German speaking only and really only did tastings one day a week at a certain time. Also only in German. And yet he got us there, got us tastings and translated along the way.

Levi, we raise a tiny Schnapps glass to you and your '+5 Tours Of Awesomeness'!

When we come back to Munich, we WILL be contacting you again!

“Awesome, just awesome!”

I've been to Munich a couple of times, I know a little about the city, and definitely love the beer. But wanted to know more...

First off Levi and John are very knowledgeable, professional, and friendly guys. Booking the tours was super easy and communication before and after was great.

Took a city highlight and beer tour with Levi. This guy is like a walking encyclopedia, but way cooler to hang out with. His knowledge of Munich is amazing, had no idea there was so many historical events that happen in Munich. Then there was the beer...... soooo goood.

Took a Summer Beergardens and Breweries of Bavaria with John. From train to hotels, food and beer to sightseeing, everything was awesome. All i can say is, smoked beer......... whaaat..... AWESOME!

I hear they have Oktoberfest tours too, i might be heading back to Munich soon.

“If you do nothing else in Munich, do this!!!!!”

Levi is one of a kind. Born in the U.S., but fluent in both English and German, he made Munich, and Germany, one of my favorite destinations around the world! His knowledge and personable demeanor is unsurpassed.

We booked a private tour for about 4 hours. We wanted to know about the history of Munich. What we got was so much more. He met us at the hotel, in Old Town at 10 AM. We started walking, and he started talking. He first spoke of the beer, and the history of the Beer Houses. That led into the history of how beer is so intertwined with Munich, the Royalty of Bavaria, then into Germany, World War II, how the Nazi history played into it, and went on and on, continuing to build upon itself. All this while casually strolling through the town. I was never rushed, it was never complicated, and was always incredibly interesting and entertaining., and had me asking so many questions.

Levi, above all the other tour guides I've had, has a way of explaining things on every level, always keeps you interested, and I was quite surprised with his knowledge base. Had we known the caliber of tour we would be getting, we would have booked him for more tours the next day. No joke.

Make sure to book him for your first full day in Old Town Munich. He laid out the town so well, my wife and I had no problem navigating the town on our own afterwards, you would have thought we lived there.

I cannot say enough about this guy. When (not if) we go back to Munich, we will look him up again. Doesn't matter what he talks about, you will learn and enjoy. I would book him to give me a tour of my own home!
